Aiming at the frontier of science and major economic and social development issues, the college conducts unique theoretical research and technology development guided by the major needs of the country's energy and mining industries. At present, the disciplines rely on national or provincial-level teaching and research platforms, such as the State Key Laboratory Coal Resources and Safe Mining, the Key Laboratory of Deep Coal Mining of the Ministry of Education, and the Jiangsu Mine Earthquake Monitoring Engineering Laboratory. The discipline of Mining Engineering is a key construction discipline of the national "211 Project", "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform", and "World-class Universities and World-class Disciplines", ranking first in China and at the world's leading level.
Since the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan", the college has undertaken 121 national scientific research projects such as "973" and "863", 174 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, and more than a thousand enterprise cooperation projects, with a total funding of 710 million yuan, of which vertical funding is 156 million yuan; won 5 national science and technology awards such as "National Science and Technology Progress Award" and "National Technology Invention Award", 153 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, authorized 855 domestic and foreign invention patents, and 23 software copyrights; formulated industry standards 14 and 545 papers were retrieved by SCI; 431 papers were retrieved by EI; 72 textbooks and monographs were published. School of Mines has a great influence on the academia of mining.
