Professor Jamal Rostami from Colorado School of Mines Visits School of Mines

On the afternoon of April 23, Professor Jamal Rostami from the Colorado School of Mines (USA) and his delegation visited the School of Mines at China University of Mining and Technology. The symposium was chaired by Professor Huang Yanli, Dean of the School, and attended by over 20 faculty representatives, postdoctoral researchers, and representatives from the School's International Affairs Office.

During the symposium, Dean Yanli Huang first reviewed the century-long development history of the School, highlighting its research achievements and progress in international cooperation in fields such as intelligent mining, green mining, and new energy technologies. He noted that the Mineral & Mining Engineering discipline at Colorado School of Mines ranks first in the QS World University Rankings, boasting a long history and profound academic heritage. Professor Rostami's visit marks a new chapter in collaboration between the two institutions. Dean Huang expressed hope for joint efforts to address industry challenges through resource sharing and complementary strengths.

Professor Rostami subsequently spoke highly of the School's innovative achievements in intelligent mining, green mining, new energy development, and mine dynamic disaster prevention and control. He introduced the history and disciplinary structure of Colorado School of Mines, detailing its accomplishments in areas such as mine environmental protection and solid waste disposal in the US, intelligent tunnel boring and ground pressure control, and space mining. During the open discussion session, both sides engaged in in-depth exchanges on topics including joint talent cultivation, disciplinary development directions, journal manuscript submission and processing, collaborative intentions and strategic planning, and cutting-edge research. The atmosphere was highly academic throughout.

It is reported that Professor Jamal Rostami is an internationally renowned authority in mining and tunneling engineering. He currently holds the Hadden/Alacer Gold Endowed Chair Professorship at Colorado School of Mines and serves as Director of the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Tunneling and Underground Space Technology. Previously, Professor Rostami served at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and has long provided technical consulting for internationally renowned mining engineering companies such as Brierley Associates. He holds Professional Engineer (PE) licenses in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. He serves as an Executive Committee Member of the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association (ITA), Chair of the Research Committee of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME), and serves on the editorial boards of journals including Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering. He has published over 230 academic papers and chaired numerous international academic conferences.
